Varicose veins can change in appearance. Veins are dynamic structures which can look different based on how much blood flow the vein is receiving and the position of the patient. You may notice varicose veins are more prominent when standing or at the end of a long day. That is due to the increase in blood flow from activities, standing and lack of elevation. Don’t be surprised if your veins change color or shape during the course of your day or week. Try to remember these changes so you can discuss them during your consultation. Highlighting which varicose veins are the problematic can help direct treatment. If you notice that your veins can change drastically (from obvious to invisible), try to bring a few pictures of your veins during their worst moments. This will help your vein specialist understand your concerns, especially if your veins are not especially prominent on the day of your visit.
