Patients with Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) feel an uncontrollable urge to move their legs to relieve discomfort. This happens virtually every night and results in poor sleep, fatigue, difficulty staying awake during the day and leg pain (not to mention the difficulties for anyone sharing a bed). Some patients even have burning, itching and tingling in their legs. These symptoms can awaken people from deep sleep and also prevent them from falling asleep on time.
About 20% of patients with RLS also have vein disease. This is a very significant correlation. Not only can chronic venous insufficiency cause RLS, but it can worsen RLS caused by other disease processes. Other causes of RLS include Parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia, pregnancy, smoking and arthritis, certain medications and kidney disease.
It is important to assess vein disease in any patient with restless leg syndrome. At the Vein Institute of Blue Bell, we provide a full consultation including ultrasound and treatment planning for patients with RLS. After treatment, most patients enjoy comfortable sleep and their partners are even more grateful. Call us at 267-416-9534 so we can help improve the health of your vein and the quality of your sleep.
